Welcome to the In-Between Season (Otherwise Known as: What Day Is It Again?)

I spent New Year’s on the East Coast this year and, honestly, I can totally get behind the idea of a two-month hiatus from life. Fuzzy socks, thick coats, darkness by 4:30 p.m.? Done. But here in Las Vegas, even though the temperatures dip and we all pretend 55 degrees is arctic, the proverbial show still goes on.

So what are your plans for the in-between — this odd stretch of life between New Year’s champagne and Super Bowl snacks? If you’ve been thinking about buying or selling a home in Las Vegas, this is actually one of the best times to connect, make a plan, and figure out what’s next before the spring real estate rush hits.

Fun fact: the original Roman calendar had just 10 months, starting with March and ending with December. What we now call January and February were basically an unnamed expanse of dark, shrug-emoji days — useless to planting and military campaigns — both of which resumed when the weather improved.

Welcome, then, to the in-between. The gap. The once-nameless winter days when society was, quite literally, off the clock.

It’s seductive to imagine that for these several weeks we might retreat to our hibernacula (yes, that was the Roman soldiers’ word for winter quarters) to spin metaphorical wool, groom metaphorical horses, and generally hide until spring arrives. What would you stock your hibernaculum with? I’m thinking lots of sweaters and soup. And maybe one of those oversized mugs that could double as home décor.

For better or worse, January exists now — named for Janus, the god of beginnings, endings, transitions, and doorways. Janus is two-faced in the best way: one face looking to the future, one to the past. Where are we going? Where have we been? That’s January’s whole vibe.

We treat it like a clean slate, a time for resolutions, vision boards, and new gym memberships. And yet, the first few weeks of January are also perfect for looking back — reconciling the past year, deciding what we’re moving away from and what we’re moving toward. (An “Away/Toward List” pairs beautifully with a glass of wine, by the way.)

I’ve also been one of those people who, somewhere in late 2025, quietly abandoned my weight-lifting routine. You know how it goes — travel, holidays, life — and suddenly the dumbbells are decorative objects. Now the thought of starting again feels weirdly daunting. So I’m putting my own theory to the test: what can I realistically get done in the next six weeks so that “spring forward” feels a little less scary?

Who’s with me?

January feels so momentous now — wild to think it was once considered so useless it didn’t even earn a name. We stuff it full of pressure and promise and to-do lists. As Mark Twain famously said:

“Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual.”

A little grumpy, yes. But if you’ve ever watched gym parking lots go from “festival overflow” to “ample availability” before the end of the month… you get it.

Personally, I like to revisit my intentions regularly. I keep the page where I’ve scribbled them close by and check in a few times a year. Sometimes I even choose a single word as my north star — one theme to guide decisions when life gets loud. (Last year’s was abbondanza; I’m still auditioning words for this year.)

So if the idea of declaring big, sweeping resolutions for an entire year feels exhausting or doomed, try this instead: pick something just for the next two months. See how it feels. If it sticks, extend it. If it doesn’t, simply cite historical precedent and say you’re following Romulus — and starting your year in March.

And if your two-month intention has anything to do with your home, your lifestyle, or your next chapter in Las Vegas — whether that’s downsizing, upsizing, new construction, or exploring 55+ active adult communities — this in-between season is actually the ideal time to get clarity. Less frenzy. Fewer distractions. More strategy.

Because here in Las Vegas, even in the chillier months, life doesn’t exactly hibernate. The city hums, the restaurants stay packed, the events keep coming, and the real estate market keeps moving — quietly now, loudly again soon.

So here’s your nudge:

Thinking about buying a home in Las Vegas this year?
Thinking about selling your Las Vegas home before spring?
Curious about new construction communities, 55+ living, or master-planned neighborhoods?

Let’s use this beautifully strange in-between to map out your next move — so by the time the Super Bowl hits and life speeds back up, you’re already ahead of the game.

Sweaters, soup, intentions… and a plan. Sounds like a pretty great start.
