Before there were fireworks, parades, and hot dogs the size of your forearm… there was a declaration.
Let’s rewind.
It’s July 4, 1776. The Founding Fathers (aka America’s original group project heroes) sign the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia — officially cutting ties with Britain and giving birth to the United States of America. Cue the dramatic entrance music and powdered wigs.
But here’s the twist:
The actual vote for independence happened two days earlier, on July 2nd. John Adams even wrote to his wife Abigail predicting July 2 would be celebrated for generations with “pomp and parade, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations.”
Close, John. Just missed it by that much.
A Few Fun Firecracker Facts
The first organized celebration happened in Philadelphia in 1777 — complete with fireworks, cannons, and a spontaneous party vibe that would make any modern-day block party proud.
The 4th wasn’t declared a federal holiday until 1870 — almost 100 years later! And it didn’t become a paid holiday for federal employees until 1938. (We’re always fashionably late with these things.)
Americans eat an estimated 150 million hot dogs on the 4th of July. That’s enough to stretch from D.C. to L.A. more than five times. Why? Because freedom tastes like mustard and grilled buns, apparently.
My Kind of Independence Day
For me, the 4th is less about red, white, and everything glittered (though I do love a good sparkle) — and more about gratitude. I think about my dad (who just turned 87 and is still in better shape than most 50-year-olds), about the freedoms we sometimes take for granted, and about this wild, beautiful country we all get to call home.
And yes, you’ll still find me enjoying a chilled drink, watching fireworks light up the desert sky, and maybe sneaking Maisie a bite of grilled chicken when no one’s looking.
So, what does this have to do with real estate?
Honestly? Everything.
Homeownership is a form of independence too — and I think it deserves to be celebrated. Whether you’ve been in your home for years, just got the keys, or are thinking of making a move, the freedom to build a life that feels like yours is something special.
So happy 4th of July, friends.
Light a sparkler, hug your dog, and toast to the fact that even 248 years later — we’re still making moves.
