A little bit of big news getting quietly dropped mid-week…
The Summerlin Studios deal failed. Again.
After seven days of political drama in Carson City — remote votes, floor fights, intense lobbying, and one very slim margin — Nevada lawmakers still couldn’t greenlight the $95 million film tax incentive package tied to the massive Summerlin Studios proposal.
One vote short. Third attempt. Script rejected.

So what’s the give? Why isn’t this passing?
Here’s the real context lawmakers kept circling back to:
1. The math doesn’t pencil right now.
Legislative fiscal analysts projected that if these credits moved forward, Nevada’s general fund could dip below required levels in 2030 and 2031 — even under normal 3% growth assumptions.
And in a tight budget year? No one wants to be the vote that forces cuts or tax hikes.
2. The incentive package was huge.
The project required $1.8B in new capital investment and $4.5B in production spending over 15 years. Transferable tax credits wouldn’t kick in until 2029 — which means the financial pressure hits the state before the benefits do.
3. The lobbying was… intense.
Construction trades pushed hard (19,000 construction jobs on the line), while progressive groups, government unions, and fiscal conservatives slammed it as a giveaway to multinational companies.
Multiple Senators publicly said they were over the pressure — one even called the vote a “referendum on special interests.”
4. The politics weren’t aligned.
Three senators were absent, the Assembly was split, and debates were fierce. Even attempts to fast-track the bill as an “emergency” failed. The votes just weren’t there — and everyone knew it by day seven.
So where does that leave us?
The studio dream isn’t dead — it’s just delayed until at least 2027.
But hey, it’s almost 2026… so maybe the dream isn’t as far away as it sounds.
And in the meantime, the real momentum is still happening in Summerlin West and Grand Park — builders are moving dirt, infrastructure is expanding, and the west side’s growth curve isn’t slowing down for anyone.
